The female hormone estrogen plays an important role in maintaining the balance of cholesterol in women. Estrogen helps raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which in turn, helps lower low-density protein (LDL). Younger women appear to be able to count estrogen as a sort of "helper" in the battle against cholesterol. However, as a woman ages, her body ceases to produce estrogen. As a woman enters menopause, and her estrogen levels fall, she may find that high cholesterol levels become a medical issue for the first time in her life.
